Cos

Cos has arrived in Sydney with little fan fare, no hype, no over the top PR. Just like the style of the clothes.

They don’t have banners all over the city, they didn’t have shots of famous models and the Kardashians aren’t wearing the clothes on Instagram. Resisting the idea to promote, promote, promote, instead they get loyal followers by just doing what they do and letting the public experience their aesthetic. They hit the mark perfectly and are very clever in capturing the spirit of quiet elegance with out flash and pompous bragging. The Swedish off shoot of H and M started up in 2007 and it opened in Melboune last year. See my post on sanded.wordpress.com.

The only PR has been from the magazines reviews, as they were all asked to the opening night, where there was a shopping frenzy by the fashion editors and their assistants. You can imagine!  Clever start to the Sydney fashion scene and super fabulous if you were there!

They have a Swedish sensibility, clean lines, and shapes that are simple but with a twist. No overexposing the body which is such a relief to find things that don’t make you wonder if the hemlines are too short or necklines too low! Perfect for you, and Fashion Tonic followers. The prices are good but the fabrics are usually synthetic which is my only criticism, although they are highly developed technically. Fabrics these day are more interesting and perform better than they ever have, so don’t despair too much as they look amazing and the designs of the garments mean they don’t restrict you too much either.  So don’t expect silks or cashmere, and the cottons are going to need an iron, but for the cost you get a lot of chic.

I have found the pants to be well cut and that’s always the test of a  good label. If they can fit my curvy shape, then there is sure to be hope for the rest of you!

If you have a wardrobe of staple black, grey, white and navy, ( which is everyone!) then you can lash out with a bit of colour now and then. There was colour in some things like a vibrant citrus lime, soft pinks and a bit of grass green, but generally the colours were really gorgeous and there were no crazy patterns. Thank goodness. There are loads of their famous white shirts and lots of soft greys and blush tones.

The building is an old classic bank beautifully styled with incredibly huge ceilings and a real New York Soho feel. It’s elegant, not like a high street store, with music blaring where it can be hard to focus and even harder to find anything that’s not cheap and for the young. So its a classic fashion fix here but with a touch of interest, with quirky accessories and things asymmetrical in actuality and in aesthetic.

You won’t find the same pieces in every other shop as you do now amongst some of the major high street stores, and as the prices are good, you can relax with your purchase that will work with loads of things in your wardrobe, adding just a hint of difference and minimalist elegance…

Yes, you can buy a lot for not much money and don’t feel guilty about the bank balance. Worth a trip into the city for a fashion fix, for office clothes and the chic urban woman – the Fashion Tonic woman.
